Our Shopify review

Shopify has spent nearly two decades turning the messy reality of selling online into something a single founder can manage from a laptop. The admin is clean, the onboarding is guided, and almost every operational task — inventory, shipping labels, discounts, taxes — lives one or two clicks away. That polish is the product, and it is why Shopify powers a larger slice of the US market than any other hosted platform.

The real moat, though, is the ecosystem. With more than 8,000 apps and thousands of themes, almost any feature you can imagine is a paid install away rather than a development project. Shopify Payments removes the friction of finding a processor, Shop Pay consistently posts some of the highest checkout conversion rates in the industry, and the channel integrations push your catalog to Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, and Google with minimal fuss.

The trade-offs are predictable. If you don't use Shopify Payments you pay extra transaction fees, the monthly app subscriptions add up as you grow, and deeper customization means learning Liquid, Shopify's templating language. For most merchants those costs are a fair price for never having to think about hosting, security, or uptime.

What stands out

  • Shop Pay checkout

Accelerated, tokenized checkout that routinely lifts conversion over standard flows.

  • 8,000+ app store

The deepest third-party ecosystem in commerce — extend almost anything without code.

  • Multichannel selling

Native syncing to Instagram, TikTok, Amazon, Google, and in-person POS.

  • Hydrogen + Oxygen

First-party headless framework and hosting for teams that want a custom storefront.

What we liked

  • Largest app store (8,000+ apps)
  • Best-in-class checkout conversion
  • Excellent 24/7 support
  • Strong multichannel selling

Where it falls short

  • Transaction fees if not using Shopify Payments
  • App costs add up quickly
  • Liquid theming has a learning curve

The verdict

Shopify is the safe, high-performing default for the vast majority of online stores. Unless you have a specific reason to choose otherwise — strict budget, content-led strategy, or a need for total code ownership — it is the platform that gets you selling fastest with the fewest surprises.

Shopify FAQ

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?
No extra fees when you use Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party gateway, Shopify adds 0.5%–2% depending on your plan.
Can I move my store off Shopify later?
You can export products, customers, and orders as CSVs, but themes and apps don't transfer. Plan a migration as a rebuild of the storefront.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes for fundamentals — clean URLs, fast hosting, and editable meta tags — though URL structures are less flexible than WordPress.
